Child Pornography Offender Risk Tool (“CPORT”) Developed and Can Help Predict Risk of Recidivism Among Adult Male Offenders with Convictions for Child Pornography!

The number of cases in which defendants are being charged with possession of child pornography has been increasing yet it is difficult to determine or predict the risk that these individuals may reoffend.

The Child Pornography Offender Risk Tool (“CPORT”) has been developed and provides a risk assessment tool designed to predict sexual recidivism among adult male offenders who have been convicted for child pornography charges.

CPORT evaluates many different factors such as: the age of the offender at the time of the incident; any prior criminal history; any prior failure on conditions such as probation, parole, conditional release; any prior sexual offense history; indication of pedophilic interests; and gender of victim in child pornography content,

Taking into account the above-mentioned factors, an offender undergoing a “CPORT Evaluation” would be given a “risk score” for reoffending. There are numerous sources of information that are helpful in determining a risk score for CPORT, such as the criminal history, police notes, offender interviews, victim and family interviews, and warrant information.

CPORT can be a beneficial tool for determining the “risk score” for individuals accused of child pornography charges. The development of CPORT has the potential to assist in negotiating for less harsh sentences for individuals who receive a low risk score after a CPORT evaluation.
